Algeria pledges to defend the interests of developing countries
Algeria took part, in its capacity as Chair of the Africa Group, in the 4th Consultation with Member States on the central theme of the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7), which was held on Saturday at the headquarters of the United Nations Office in Nairobi.
During this meeting, the Algerian delegation, led by Ambassador Boumediene Mahi, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations Office in Nairobi, intervened on the proposed theme entitled: "Solutions for an equitable and resilient planet", as well as the related document, said a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad.
"The concept of equity, as it is currently formulated, remains insufficient"
Ambassador Mahi "expressed concern about the lack of views from many developing countries, particularly in Africa, during previous consultations, and stressed the need to take into account key issues such as sustainable development, just transition, access to adequate means of implementation, and recognition of the specific circumstances and capacities of the countries concerned," underlines the press release.
Reaffirming Algeria's "commitment to defending the interests of developing countries", the Ambassador "insisted on the importance of guaranteeing a genuine just transition, essential for the integration of the priorities of these countries", according to the same source. He also said that "the concept of equity, as currently formulated, remains insufficient and does not take into account several dimensions that are crucial for developing countries."
Promoting economic self-sufficiency
In addition, Ambassador Mahi stressed "the need to explicitly include just transition in the theme of UNEA-7." He also "welcomed the consideration by the Omani presidency of various important aspects, such as scientific innovation, access to data and information, early warning systems, strategic foresight and the use of artificial intelligence," the statement noted.
However, "he insisted on respect for data sovereignty, the promotion of economic autonomy and the preservation of cultural heritage within the framework of this theme," the text continues. Consultations on the theme of UNEA-7 concluded at this meeting, leaving the Presidency now responsible for submitting the final version of the theme by next December.
